BMW To End Green PR Efforts and Actually Deliver Electric Car…Maybe
BMW likes to show off incredibly advanced green car concepts, but never brings them to market. This may change with a new claim it will have BMW electric cars on the market by 2013.BMW has been taking a bit of a beating lately. First, it went into Formula 1 with a stated plan of winning championships. Nearly a decade later, it was leaving the sport with its tail between its legs after winning no championships and generally getting its butt kicked by the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault.
Staring a PR disaster in the face, BMW is now promising it is actually going to build and bring an electric car to market. The target date is 2013, so the company is hardly making a big commitment considering other companies are launching their versions this year. All indications, however, are the company may not be faking it this time. A plant is breaking ground in Moses Lake, Washington to manufacture the carbon fiber that will be used for the body of the vehicle. Carbon fiber, of course, is very light which puts less strain on the battery.
So, can we actually believe that BMW will build an electric car this time? I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’ve owned BMWs in the past and loved them. The company is good at its niche, but has a bad habit of promising the world and delivering nada. The fact that such an electric car would come out three full years after the rest of the market makes it all the less likely we’ll actually see a mass produced electric Beemer anytime soon.
That’s too bad.
