What is the Deal with Oil Refineries?

What is the deal with oil refineries? Where do they come from? Where do they drill, how do you start one? If you are wondering about these things, the answers are contained below.

It seems as though all the world is interested in oil these days. This may be largely due to the fact that those rising pump prices have a few people more than a little bit curious. Or, it could be due to the fact that the press is tapping into the fuel world more than ever before. No matter what the reason may be, people simply want to know: what is the deal with oil refineries? Well, here are the basic of the refinery world that you may want to know.

The refinery itself is a sort of station where crude oil (the stuff taken from the earth) is processed into gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil, kerosene, and other types of products that we use on a day to day basis. These buildings are almost always rather large, and they are also very dangerous given the fact that they contain large amounts of chemicals and fluids. In order to erect such an establishment, you must find a site that is far away from any residential area; it must be able to deal with raw materials properly; and all waste must be taken away from the plant carefully. Additionally, any building of this type must take into consideration the environment.

What is the deal with oil refineries when it comes to the environment? Well, since the mere process of converting crude into usable oil tends to release various chemicals into the air, various types of air pollutants can cause environmental damage. Within the United States, no new refinery has been built since 1976 in order to try and protect the environment from further damage, though this may soon change.

Now that the United States is seeking a way to begin exporting more fuel, many believe that the answer to this is to explore new lands. However, environmental groups are no so quick to back up this plan due to the damage mentioned above. Still, this may be the only option if fuel prices continue to rise.

What is the deal with oil refineries? Well, now you know. Without these buildings, many people would not be able to live their daily lives that depend, largely, upon fuel.
