The hybrid car is not considered the solution to our transport issues. The media touts it as such, but it really is not. In the auto and energy industries, it is considered an evolutionary step. How so? It is much more efficient than a combustion engine car and much better for the environment. Let's take a look at exactly what this means.
The Great Recession has hidden a big society problem. That problem is oil. Oil is a non-renewable resource. We currently use about 84 million barrels a day world wide. The world currently can produce between 85 and 87 million a day. In short, we are right up against the cap on what can be supplied. The recession has caused a small drop in what we use daily and it is hiding a big problem. Most of the major oil fields in the world have “peaked” and are now starting to produce less oil every year. The major field in Mexico, for instance, now produces 10 percent less each year.
A hybrid car helps with this problem because of simple math. Since the car runs on electric power a good bit of the time, it uses much less gasoline than a normally aspirated car. Gasoline is, of course, made from oil. Most hybrids will average in the high 30 to 40 miles per gallon range, which makes them a good deal at the pump. With gasoline prices expected to at least double in the next ten years, this will become even more valuable in future years.
The second reason to get a hybrid has to do with the environment. The hybrid does not produce pollution in the form of exhaust when running on batteries. This means less pollution in cities and less carbon dioxide in the air. Normal combustion engines produce many greenhouse gases, so buying a hybrid is one way to minimize your carbon footprint.
