Ford Going All In On Green Cars
American car companies are often correctly accused of being behind the ball on trends. Well, Ford is trying to fix that by going all in on the green car movement.American car companies have often been associated with government entities. They are big entities that seem to take forever to react to anything. This has been particularly true during the green movement. While Honda and Toyota were building hybrids, the “Big Three” were still building giant SUVs.
Ford has long been working on turning around this problem. The company has tried to be more relevant and ahead of the curve. Oddly, this showed up during the Great Recession. The company was the only one of the Big Three that saw the problems coming and prepare for it financially. While GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy and took money from the government, Ford did neither. Americans rewarded it by buying Ford like never before and should continue to do so. Now, they may have a reason.
2010 is the year of the green car. Not only are we seeing a continued trend towards buying hybrids, but the electric car generation is about to start with the introduction of the Nissan Leaf by the end of the year. Ford already has its excellent Fusion Hybrid on the market and is now planning a major push towards further green car development.

The company plans to convert a full 25 percent of its product line to green technology by 2020. This represents a huge percentage compared to all other car companies. Of the 25 percent, Ford expects 70 percent to be hybrids and 30 percent to be electric. The conversion process is already under way.
Perhaps the best example of the new view is to consider the re-launch of Lincoln. The stoic “old man” brand is going to be launched again as a hybrid line. The first car will be the Lincoln MKZ hybrid. It will get an estimated 41 miles to the gallon. Yes, you read that right. The brand that was known for being akin to driving a tank will now be getting 40 plus miles to the gallon! Talk about a revolution.
