VW Models Going Hybrid and Electric
Volkswagen has been late to the hybrid game, preferring efficient diesel platforms instead. No longer. VW has announced it is launching hybrid models and even electric cars.
VW has a unique view of the fuel efficiency market. Europe has long had very high gasoline prices as a matter of public policy. Given this, the German company and all European manufacturers have looked to unique ways to improve gas mileage. The end result has been to create clean diesel cars that get 40 or 50 miles to the gallon. This works for the European market, but not the United States.
Diesel has never been popular in the U.S. Volkswagen has been trying to change this with its excellent diesel products. Those that buy them are happy with the vehicles, but not enough people are making the leap of faith. VW finally seems to realize it made the wrong choice and is now rushing to change that.
The company has confirmed it will be offering battery assisted engine systems. Better known as the popular hybrid, VW is jumping in with both feet. It will be launching a hybrid version of the Jetta in 2012. 2013 will see the introduction of hybrid versions of the Golf and Passat as well. The all electric Up! will be launched the same year. In exciting news, VW also announced it will have all electric Golf and Jetta versions a year after that.

The changes at Volkswagen portend further changes in many of the offering we will see coming out of Germany. This is, of course, because Volkswagen is also the owner of such prolific brands as Porsche and Audi. One can expect those divisions of the country to soon announce their own hybrid plans and, perhaps, even electric models.
Volkswagen may be late to the game when it comes to the hybrid market, but there is not doubt it is jumping in with both metaphysical feet. More competition will breed better prices, which is certainly a positive thing.
