Heavy Research and Development Being Put Into Hydrogen Vehicles
The hydrogen economy seems a bit of a pipe dream given the hurdles. Perhaps not. There are signs of heavy research and development being put into hydrogen vehicles these days.
The hydrogen car is the utopia vehicle for auto designers. Why? Well, the environmental impact and fuel use of the car would be minimal. It would use no gasoline. Oil usage would be for lubrication only, if at that. Emissions from the hydrogen fuel battery would come in the form of water, hardly a dangerous substance to the environment. The decrease in smog, greenhouse emissions and the like would be substantial.
Unfortunately, hydrogen energy has always been viewed as a long term solution given the hurdles involved in moving it to the market. President Obama noted that we must be at the front of its development, but his pick for head of the Energy Department actually axed all government funding for its research! Fortunately, other countries have taken a far more proactive approach.
Japan is a major player in the hydrogen energy field. The country puts over $300 million a year towards its development. The goal is to have fully 25 percent of the households in the country powered by hydrogen by 2020. Companies like Honda and Toyota have jumped into the field with vigor and, now, are seeing results as well. Both expect to have hydrogen cars as part of their product lines by 2015.

So, does this mean the hydrogen revolution is upon us? Unfortunately, it does not appear to be the case. That being said, every technology revolution has to start somewhere. Just consider mobile phones. The first ones created were pretty much abominations and crimes against technology, but look at what we have today. It’s an entirely different world. Sooner or later, the same will be said of hydrogen.
