Will The Electric Car Kill The Hydrogen Car?
The race to get electric and hydrogen cars to market it over. The electric car has clearly won. The question now is whether the electric car will kill the hydrogen car.You might be surprised to learn that both the electric and hydrogen car have been around for decades. They have, but have never been developed for the market because there simply was no demand. Oil was selling at less than $10 a barrel until the 1990s. It was only really when oil starting going up and people started recognizing the environment was taking a beating that the idea of launching an alternative fuel car became a possibility.
The hybrid car was the test vehicle. The massive success of cars like the Prius convinced auto manufacturers that the public was ready for something new. If hybrids were a hit, it isn’t a leap of faith to imagine a car that ran on no gasoline would be even more popular. The question was whether it would be an electric or hydrogen fueled car.
The clear winner is the electric car. Sporty versions like the Tesla are already on the streets. This fall will see the big manufacturers start to bring their models to the broad market. Hype and anticipation is high for cars like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt. Other car companies will be releasing their own models soon after that. Hydrogen? There are no plans for the launch of any hydrogen fuel cell cars for the mass market. Not…a…single…one.

The question many are asking is will the electric car kill the hydrogen version? This may seem a subjective question, but there is a basic objective issue that is at the heart of the debate. It has to do with fueling. Whether we are talking electric or hydrogen cars, the government is going to have to pony up a lot of money to establishing fueling stations.
Currently, there are no hydrogen “gas” stations and only a very few electric ones in the country. The government will spend the money, probably in concert with private companies, to develop one or the other, but not both. With electric cars coming to market, the government will obviously build millions of electricity charging stations. Having done this, it is unlikely to turn around and build millions of hydrogen ones as well. Thus, we can predict with some accuracy that the electric car will kill the hydrogen car for the next 30 to 50 years at least.
